From 2028, Africa’s premier international football tournament will be held every four years, ending a long-standing tradition of a biennial competition that has been in place since 1968.
CAF believes the new format will help improve the quality of the tournament, allow better preparation for host nations, and reduce scheduling pressure on players and clubs.
The change will come after the 2027 AFCON, which will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in East Africa. A special 2028 edition will follow, after which the four-year cycle will officially begin.
We have the most exciting new structure for African football,” CAF President Motsepe said.
The reforms mark a significant shift in African football’s calendar and could reshape how the continent’s game develops in the years ahead.
