Tanzania head coach Miguel Gamondi has stressed that tactical discipline will be decisive if the Taifa Stars are to grind out a result against Nigeria in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Tanzania face the Super Eagles in a high-stakes Group C clash on Tuesday, with both sides eager to make a strong start to the continental tournament.
Gamondi expects a difficult test against a Nigerian side stacked with attacking quality, led by Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman.
“We need to be realistic. When you see the qualities in the Nigeria team, you need to put in more than 100 percent effort to try to neutralize them,” Gamondi said at a pre-match press conference.
“Our mentality is to try to play and attack as well, but we need to be tactically disciplined.”
Tanzania are chasing their first-ever AFCON victory over Nigeria, while the Super Eagles are targeting a deep run at the tournament after missing out on qualification for the World Cup for a second consecutive time.
The Taifa Stars will be hoping organization, discipline and belief can help them spring an early surprise against one of Africa’s heavyweights.
