Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan have bowed out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 3-1 defeat to Senegal in the round of 16.
Sudan, who were one of the surprise packages of the tournament, had progressed to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, finishing third in Group E with three points.
Appiah, a former Ghana Black Stars coach, had guided Sudan to their second AFCON knockout stage appearance since 1970. Sudan’s campaign was marked by a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea, courtesy of an own goal, and defeats to Algeria and Burkina Faso.
Despite their exit, Appiah’s men left with their heads held high, having earned respect for their fighting spirit and tactical discipline.
Senegal, on the other hand, will face the winner of Tunisia and Mali in the quarterfinals.
