Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has dismissed two workers from the car park at Accra International Airport after they were accused of extorting money from passengers.

The company said the disciplinary action followed repeated complaints from travellers, which prompted investigations into claims of misconduct. Those investigations identified the workers responsible, allowing GACL to take immediate action.

Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of GACL, said the dismissals were part of wider efforts to prevent extortion and improve the experience of people using the airport.

She was speaking during a visit to Accra International Airport by Parliament’s Committee on Roads and Transportation on Tuesday, August 4.

Mrs Opare said the company remained committed to professionalism, accountability and strong customer service across all areas of airport operations. She also appealed to passengers and members of the public to report any incidents involving staff misconduct.

“Just about two weeks ago, we had two people expelled from the airport in the car park, workers who asked passengers for money. And instantly, because we were able to identify and zero in on the specific people, we were able to have them leave the airport immediately. So we are asking the general public to help us address these issues,” Mrs Opare said.

Her comments underline the importance GACL is placing on complaints from passengers in identifying staff members accused of improper conduct.

The company said reports from travellers had been central to the investigations that led to the two dismissals. It urged members of the public to continue providing information about similar incidents so that alleged offenders could be identified and dealt with quickly.

Mrs Opare said passenger feedback would help GACL respond more swiftly to misconduct and support its efforts to maintain standards throughout airport operations.

The two workers were dismissed from their roles in the airport car park after the investigations linked them to requests for money from passengers. GACL described the action as part of its continuing attempt to eliminate extortion and strengthen accountability.

The visit by Parliament’s Committee on Roads and Transportation provided the setting for the Managing Director to outline the company’s response. She used the occasion to reaffirm GACL’s intention to improve the overall experience for travellers at Accra International Airport.

The company has not provided further details about the identities of the dismissed workers or the specific complaints made against them. It has, however, said the cases demonstrate the importance of passengers reporting concerns and of acting on information received.

GACL’s appeal is for travellers and other members of the public to continue reporting misconduct, with the aim of enabling the company to investigate complaints, identify those responsible and take swift disciplinary action.
