Abubakari Damba has backed Jojo Wollacott to be Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup to be staged in Qatar later this month.
The Charlton Athletic star was recently named as one of five goalkeepers in Otto Addo’s 55-man provisional squad for the global showpiece.
The 26 year old is widely expected to make the final cut for the tournament and Abubakari Damba insists he is the worthy candidate to man the post for the country.
Ghana are pitted in Group H alongside Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.
“We played the qualifiers and had one goalkeeper who had shown consistencies throughout, that is Jojo Wollacott the most used among all the keepers so far, all things being equal he might be the first choice,” the legendary Ghanaian shot stopper shared his opinion during an interview with GNA Sports.
Damba argued that Ghana currently does not have goalkeepers playing at top European clubs as compared to other countries, but noted that, the country must manage what was at their disposal.
“One of our challenges is that we don’t have goalkeepers who are very gifted in the team in as much as we would not be satisfied with their performances because of comparisons.
“We see other goalkeepers playing for their clubs and their nations performing well so we do comparisons but I’m very positive that we can do well,” he stated.
