Leeds United pursuit of Bundesliga star Timo Hubers available for bargain release clause becomes four-way race

Leeds United have scouted Bundesliga defender Timo Hubers, though three other English sides have now entered the mix for a player who has a tempting release clause, per a report.

The right-footed centre-half, 25, has played his entire career to date in Germany. Hubers – who stands at 6ft 3in tall – was a squad player at Hannover before moving to FC Koln last summer.

Hubers has found game-time easier to come by at his new club. Indeed, he has started all but two of Koln’s league matches since December 14. The two fixtures he missed were due to Covid protocols and suspension.

Koln are flying high in sixth position this year. However, online outlet Football Insider stresses all is not well at the club.

Koln are reportedly under financial pressure due to the pandemic and could lose several stars this summer.

Hubers is the subject of their article and it’s claimed he is attracting widespread interest from England.

Leeds reportedly scouted the defender during their Bundesliga clash with Arminia Bielefeld last weekend. It’s hinted that wasn’t the first time he has been monitored this season.

Hubers reportedly holds a bargain £6.7m release clause within his contract. Koln’s financial woes could result in an even lower bid being accepted for Hubers, though they will attempt to hold out for the full fee if interest firms up.

Timo Hubers a wanted man

However, Leeds won’t have a move for Hubers all their own way.

It’s claimed Crystal Palace, Fulham and Watford are all now in contention to sign the 25-year-old.

All four clubs are said to view Hubers as an ‘affordable option’ to boost their depth. They’re also of the opinion he has the type of game that could translate well into the Premier League.

Hubers’ current contract with Koln expires in the summer of 2023. If the German outfit are to avoid losing him for free in 14 month’s time, an exit in the coming months may be required.
