VIDEO: Ransford-Yeboah scores in shock Hamburg home defeat

Ghana’s Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer scored but Hamburg SV slumped to a stunning 3-2 defeat at home to basement boys FC Magdeburg in a 2022/23 German 2. Bundesliga match-day 13 fixture Sunday afternoon.

The hosts were looking to bounce back from their heavy DFB-Pokal defeat to RB Leipzig in midweek but former coach Christian Titz and youth player of Ghanaian descent Moritz-Broni Kwarteng came in with the shocker from the visiting side.

Magdeburg took a two-goal lead through Moroccan Mo El Hankouri in the 11th minute and Baris Atik who scored after just 6 minutes into the second half.

Despite dominating possession, Hamburg just couldn’t get going in an attacking sense.

It appeared as if the game was put to bed, but it finally woke Hamburg into life and they were given a lifeline by Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer on 58 minutes. The young striker was alert in the box to turn home Ludovit Reis’ cross.

It was the new Black Stars boy’s second home league goal as well as his fourth of the campaign.

Three minutes later, Hamburg thought they were level when Silas Gnaka, unfortunately, put the ball into the back of his own net but the Magdeburg defender’s blushes were spared by VAR’s intervention for an offside in the build-up.

Hamburg pushed for a legitimate equaliser but were caught on the break when Julian Rieckmann made it 3-1 late on.

Tom Sanne’s injury-time effort was only ever a consolation.

What looked like a perfect opportunity to return to the top of the table turned out a nightmare for Hamburg who now drop to third position with 25 points, three behind leaders SV Darmstadt 98.
