“World Cup is a big stage for players who have the heart to perform”

Former Ghana assistant coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has emphasized the essence of parading the right players to represent Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghanaian fans praised the second-half performance of the Black Stars against Brazil on Friday but didn’t spare Otto Addo for his ‘unfavourable’ starting XI against the Samba Boys.

An improved second-half display that saw the introduction of Inaki Williams, Mohammed Salisu, and Tariq Lamptey had the Black Stars compete strongly against the South American giants.

Tuesday evening presents another opportunity for the squad to further prove their battle readiness and the 76-year-old Sarpong has advised the head coach to be vigilant with his selection of players as the Mundial looms.

“Selection must be done on merit and those who have the heart to perform. On a bigger stage like the World Cup, it is only players who have big hearts who must be encouraged to play,” he told Graphic Online.

“The truth is that Ghana has names who are playing well outside but currently don’t have a team which is near competitive. These friendly games will ultimately turn out positively for a team in the World Cup,” he further added.
