Thomas Tuchel admits Mateo Kovacic’s ankle injury ‘does not look good’

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel stated that Mateo Kovacic’s ankle injury ‘does not look good’ following the midfielder’s withdrawal from Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final victory against Crystal Palace.

The 27-year-old lasted just 26 minutes before being replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who went on to score the first goal in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory.

Tuchel was unable to provide much specifics immediately following the encounter, but did state that his central midfielder’s injury ‘does not look good.’

‘Not so good,’ Tuchel told Chelsea TV of Kovacic.

‘He has a big, big swollen ankle. It does not look good, and he is in pain.

‘So let’s wait for the examination but it seems like quite an injury.’

Chelsea do not appear to have much left to play for in the league, other than retaining third position, which they appear to be doing rather effectively, although they face Arsenal, West Ham, and Manchester United in the following weeks.

Chelsea’s final significant match of the season was set on Sunday with their victory against Palace, with The Blues now scheduled to face Liverpool in the FA Cup final on 13 May.
