Tottenham Hotspur have been scouting Mohammed Kudus ahead of a potential swoop…
What’s the word?
That’s according to GhanaWeb, who claim that Spurs have been monitoring the 22-year-old’s situation at Ajax for the past six months and believe that his lack of playing time could help them secure a deal.
It’s also thought that the north Londoners would be prepared to wait until next summer, if they cannot secure a move before deadline day on September 1st.
It remains to be seen exactly how much the Ghana international would command. Transfermarkt currently value him at just £9m.
Midfield potential
With Spurs reportedly on the lookout for a playmaking talent, a move for Kudus appears to make little sense, though there is no doubting his potential. Last week, he made his 43rd appearance for the Eredivisie giants and even got on the scoresheet as Ajax were defeated by arch-rivals PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Super Cup.
Largely, Kudus has struggled to maintain a place in Ajax’s starting XI, managing only 16 league appearances last season, in which just four matches were starts, via Transfermarkt.
Do you want Kudus at Spurs?
Despite his lack of minutes, though, former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag – now in charge of Spurs’ top-flight rivals Manchester United – once lauded him as a player with “incredible potential.”
A long-term injury is partly down to his absence in recent times as he suffered a meniscus problem just nine minutes into his Champions League debut against Liverpool in 2020.
It’s hard to envisage Kudus breaking into the Spurs side under Antonio Conte if he were to join this month, though for the long-term, he could be an ideal addition as he is capable of playing in the no.6 and no.8 role, as well as further forward.
A career average of 4.2 attempted tackles, 4.2 successful dribbles and one key pass per 90, via WhoScored, further reinforces his characteristics as a viable box-to-box monster and in some ways, he could bring shades of Mousa Dembele back to N17.
The Belgian was famed for his ability to get on the ball, shield it and drive forward to allow the more attacking players to then contribute something in the final third and on the above evidence, this is something that Kudus could look to replicate in a Spurs shirt.
Whilst he’s not needed right now, the Ajax gem could be one for the future.
