The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has finally confirmed new names for four of the country’s national teams.
It will be recalled that on February 26, 2021, the GFA invited the general public for suggestions as the Executive Council considers giving “proper names” to the home-based senior national team (Local Black Stars), the CHAN team as well as the newly-created male and female U-15 national teams.
Some 16 months on, the GFA has firmed up the names which take immediate effect.
An announcement Wednesday read: “The lists include the CHAN team, Boys and Girls U-15 national teams and the Beach Soccer national team.
“The CHAN team which used to be Local Black Stars is now called Black Galaxies henceforth.
“The national U-15 Girls team will be referred to as Black Damsels while the Boys U-15 will be called Black Comets.
“The eFootball national team will be renamed.
“The Council also took a decision to maintain the name of the national Beach Soccer team – Black Sharks.”
Meanwhile, the Black Galaxies have been in camp preparing to kick-start the Chan 2023 qualifiers against Benin. Ghana will host the first leg scheduled for the weekend of July 22-24. The second leg comes off the following weekend – July 29-31.
Also next month, the Black Sharks face Egypt in the qualifiers for the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Mozambique.
