Ghana’s Black Meteors begin their bid to reach the 2027 CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations with a difficult two-legged second-round tie against Libya.
Desmond Ofei’s squad arrived in Benghazi on Sunday, November 8, ahead of Wednesday’s opening match at the Benghazi International Stadium.
The first leg will kick off at 7pm local time, which is 5pm in Ghana. The return fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana advanced directly to the second round after receiving a bye in the opening stage of qualifying. They must now overcome Libya across the two matches to keep their hopes of reaching the continental tournament alive.
The winner of the tie will progress to the next qualifying round, where they will face either Equatorial Guinea or Niger.
The Black Meteors arrived at Benina International Airport on Sunday and will use the days before the first leg to complete their preparations for the encounter with the North African side.
Qualification for the 2027 CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations would also improve Ghana’s prospects of securing a place in the men’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Ghana have not appeared in men’s football at the Olympic Games since Athens in 2004. A successful qualifying campaign would therefore mark an important stage in the country’s attempt to return to the competition after a long absence.
