Former Paris Saint-Germain and France forward Jerome Rothen believes Vinicius Junior’s suspension has worked in Real Madrid’s favour by giving Yan Diomande the opportunity to establish himself in the team.
Speaking to Tribuna, Rothen described the Brazilian’s absence as “a blessing in disguise”, saying Diomande had taken full advantage of the opening. The player has returned to the left wing and is now making a significant contribution to the side.
Diomande earns Mourinho’s trust
Rothen said Diomande is now receiving regular playing time and has gained the confidence of manager Jose Mourinho. The player had found the start of the season difficult, with pressure linked to his transfer fee and uncertainty over his role on the pitch affecting his performances.
The former France international believes the left flank gives Diomande greater freedom. Mourinho has asked him to press opponents and provide defensive support, while also encouraging him to carry the ball forward and move into central areas.
Those movements, Rothen said, help Real Madrid maintain balance in midfield and give the team greater tactical stability.
Mbappe’s work rate has improved
Rothen also discussed Real Madrid’s defensive effort, saying the team’s approach had changed from the period when Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius were contributing less without the ball.
He believes Mbappe is now working harder defensively, while Diomande’s movement and tactical discipline provide the balance Real Madrid require.
Asked whether Vinicius had lost his place in the starting line-up, Rothen said he had, although he warned that Diomande would need to maintain his current level to keep it.
“For me, yes, Vinicius has lost his place,” Rothen said. “Diomande will have to defend his position, but even if he is slightly less talented technically, the work he does in terms of positioning and providing balance to the team gives him a two-step advantage over Vinicius.”
Rothen’s comparison focuses on tactical discipline and the overall contribution of the two players rather than individual ability. He acknowledged that Vinicius remains the more gifted player technically, but said Diomande’s defensive work, positioning and team-first approach currently give him the edge.
Real Madrid are scheduled to play AEK Athens in the Champions League on 04 November 2026 before facing Valencia in La Liga on 07 November 2026.
