Ghana’s Golden Arms have secured four gold and four silver medals at the 2026 World Armwrestling Championships in New Delhi, India, with three competitors still in contention as the event enters its final stages.
Youth competitors Mabel Yeboah and Blessed Abeka Nunoo have led the country’s medal charge, each winning both the left-arm and right-arm events in their respective weight categories.
Yeboah claimed double gold in the Youth Women’s 60kg division, while Nunoo achieved the same feat in the Junior Women’s 60kg category. Their results have highlighted the growing strength of Ghana’s emerging armwrestling talent.
Experienced members of the team have also made an impact in the Masters divisions. Police officer Grace Minta won two silver medals in the Masters Women’s 80kg category.
Florence Boakye Mensah added another silver in the Masters Women’s over-90kg division, while Dodzi Asinu completed Ghana’s current medal tally with silver in the Masters Men’s 110kg category.
Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) president Charles Osei Asibey described the performance as a significant moment for the country’s development in the sport.
“I am super impressed. The world is happy with our performance; we have become the talk of the championship,” he told the Graphic Sports.
“I am elated that the work we started just years ago is getting us international recognition. Our achievement is unprecedented.”
The success in New Delhi follows a decade of efforts to establish armwrestling structures in Ghana, increase participation at grass-roots level and develop athletes capable of competing with established international opponents.
The federation believes the medal haul offers further evidence that those long-term investments are producing results at the highest level.
Ghana target more medals
Ghana’s campaign will continue with three athletes still scheduled to compete before the championships finish on November 6.
Para-armwrestler Haruna Tahiru returns on November 2 for the Para Standing over-110kg right-arm event. He narrowly missed out on the semi-finals in the left-arm competition and will be seeking a stronger result in his next contest.
The senior events will then feature Godwin Sackey and Afia Kumah, who begin their campaigns on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
Sackey will compete in the Men’s 75kg left-arm category, while Kumah will take part in the Women’s over-90kg right-arm division.
Both athletes are also due to compete in their respective right-arm events. Sackey’s further contest is scheduled for November 5, with Kumah’s event taking place on November 6, the final day of the championships.
