A 23-year-old student has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime, to wit stealing, and stealing, in a case involving the alleged theft of GH¢1.5 million belonging to Bishop Daniel Obinim.
Ohemaa Serwaa Abigail Owusu Ansah entered her plea during her second appearance before the Adenta Circuit Court on Friday.
She was previously granted bail of GH¢1 million, with two sureties, including one required to justify the bail with landed property. The court deferred taking her plea at that hearing.
Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, who is prosecuting, told the court that Bishop Obinim, the founder of the International Godsway Church, was the complainant and that the accused was his friend.
The prosecution said Ms Owusu Ansah visited Bishop Obinim at his home in Lakeside on 13 October 2026. During their conversation in his room, the bishop left the residence to attend church, leaving her at the house.
At about 0700 hours the following morning, Bishop Obinim reportedly discovered that his safe had been forced open and that GH¢1.5 million was missing.
According to the prosecution, when questioned, the accused said she had contacted a worker of her father, identified as Owusu. He allegedly arranged for two young men to meet her at the bishop’s residence.
The prosecution told the court that Ms Owusu Ansah allegedly led the two men into the room and showed them where the safe was located. The men then reportedly broke it open, removed the money and left the property.
She was arrested on 16 October 2026 at about 1400 hours and taken to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department, the court heard.
In her caution statement, Ms Owusu Ansah allegedly admitted inviting the two men to Bishop Obinim’s residence to break into the safe and steal the money.
Chief Inspector Lanyo said investigations into the case were continuing.
