Michael Carrick has ended uncertainty over the Manchester United captaincy, confirming Bruno Fernandes will continue to lead the team despite a recent dispute between the pair.
Carrick made his position clear before United’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea on Saturday, 31 October 2026, saying Fernandes remained fully committed to the club and that there were no problems between them.
The disagreement followed Fernandes’ public criticism of Manchester United’s tactics after their heavy 4-1 defeat by Como in the Champions League. Carrick then left the Portugal international out of the side for Sunday’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.
Explaining the decision, Carrick told Reuters: “It was a decision based on what we thought was right for the game, that’s all it was.”
He added: “Bruno is fully committed to this club, there are no issues whatsoever. We move forward, make decisions as we go and focus on Saturday’s game. He has led the team brilliantly over many games and many years, and he will continue to do so.”
Carrick said the disagreement had been resolved following candid discussions with Fernandes.
Carrick facing pressure
Manchester United are enduring one of the most difficult periods in their recent history. The defeat by Bournemouth extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions and left them 16th in the Premier League table, only one point clear of the relegation zone.
Senior club officials held emergency talks on Monday amid speculation over Carrick’s future, but he remains in charge.
“I fully understand the nature of the job, I understand the role and the responsibilities that come with it, so I don’t need reassurance from anybody,” Carrick said in response to the reports.
Former Manchester United captain and club great Gary Neville questioned the decision to retain Carrick. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, he said: “I think keeping him is a result of a lack of planning and a lack of options. Sometimes a manager needs to be sacked for his own good. I needed to be sacked by Valencia; I was happy to end my suffering.”
Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim in January and helped restore optimism among supporters by guiding Manchester United to third place last season.
However, the team have not won a league match since beating newly promoted Ipswich Town on 30 August. Their next opportunity to end that run comes against Chelsea on Saturday.
