Ghana U-23 coach Desmond Ofei says he is “100 per cent” certain the Black Meteors will qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Ghana are preparing to face Libya in the second round of the African qualifying campaign as they attempt to return to the men’s football tournament for the first time since Athens 2004.
Ofei spoke confidently about his side’s prospects after watching Hearts of Oak beat Basake Holy Stars at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday.
“100 per cent that we will qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games,” he said.
“I believe we can qualify because I feel the time is right and it has been way too long and we are preparing well and the boys are hungry to prove to the nation that there is a lot of talent in this country that Ghana is one of the best footballing nations in Africa and it is up to us to show and as I said, the boys are hungry to prove themselves.”
The coach said Ghana would approach the tie against Libya determined to secure progress and maintain their hopes of reaching the Games.
“I believe it will be a good show and we will do everything is our power to beat Libya and in March, we will take on any opponent and we will be ready for that,” he added.
Ghana are scheduled to travel to Libya for the first leg of the second-round tie during the 9-17 November 2026 international window. The return leg will be played in Ghana.
The Black Meteors have not appeared at the Olympic Games since their last participation in the men’s football competition at Athens 2004.
Qualification for Los Angeles 2028 would therefore end a 24-year absence from the tournament. Ofei believes the current squad has both the preparation and motivation required to achieve that objective.
He also said the players were eager to demonstrate the strength of Ghanaian football and underline the country’s status among Africa’s leading football nations.
Ghana must first overcome Libya across the two legs of the second-round tie before progressing in the African qualifying process. The first meeting will take place in Libya, with the decisive return fixture following in Ghana.
