Andriy Lunin said discipline, determination and collective effort were decisive as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou.
The Ukraine goalkeeper replaced Thibaut Courtois, who was unavailable because of a severe cold, and produced an impressive display. His most important contribution came when the score was 1-1, as he made a crucial save to deny Barcelona and help Real Madrid secure all three points.
Lunin said playing away from home had made the match more demanding, but insisted Real Madrid’s desire to win had proved decisive.
“Discipline and fighting spirit, because we really wanted to win the match,” he said. “Playing away from home is more difficult, but we got three very important points.”
Lunin praises daily work behind key save
Asked about the save that kept Real Madrid in the contest, Lunin highlighted the contribution of goalkeeping coach Nuno to his development.
The goalkeeper said Nuno’s repeated assessment of “good training” reflected the importance of the work carried out each day and the need to remain prepared for decisive moments.
Lunin also stressed that major matches require the whole team to remain united. Real Madrid, he said, must know how to withstand pressure and difficult periods until the final whistle, particularly when facing opponents of Barcelona’s quality.
The victory was Real Madrid’s fifth in a row, but Lunin warned against allowing the result to interrupt the team’s progress. He said the players must continue improving rather than becoming satisfied with their recent results, with the priority being to remain on the right path in the next stage of the season.
He also addressed Real Madrid’s ability to settle matches in the closing minutes. That quality has been evident over recent years, Lunin said, but the team must place greater focus on its work on the pitch.
Real Madrid’s ambitions, he added, require the players to keep working harder and maintain their concentration.
