Former Ghana captain Andre Ayew says the Black Stars never blamed Asamoah Gyan for missing the decisive penalty in their 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay.

Instead, Ayew believes Luis Suarez’s deliberate handball on the goal line denied Ghana a place in the semi-finals and ended the hopes of millions of African football supporters.

Speaking on the Obione Podcast, the former Olympique de Marseille and Swansea City winger defended Gyan, who had played a key role in Ghana’s historic run.

“We weren’t angry at Baby Jet [Asamoah Gyan]. Without him, we wouldn’t have got that far. Suarez’s handball killed the hopes of not just Ghana, but the whole continent. We believed we could surprise the world.”

Ghana, coached by Milovan Rajevac, had progressed from a group containing Germany, Australia and Serbia before defeating the United States 2-1 after extra time in the last 16. Gyan scored the winning goal to take the Black Stars into the quarter-finals for the first time.

The team, one of the youngest at the tournament, had earned praise for its resilience, tactical discipline and attacking quality. Gyan scored three goals during the competition and was central to their progress.

Their quarter-final against Uruguay took place on July 2, 2010, at Soccer City in Johannesburg. The match finished 1-1 after extra time, with Sulley Muntari putting Ghana ahead with a long-range strike in first-half stoppage time before Diego Forlan equalised with a free-kick early in the second half.

The decisive incident came in the final seconds of extra time. Dominic Adiyiah’s header was heading into the net when Uruguay forward Suarez used his hands to block the ball on the goal line.

Suarez was shown a straight red card and Ghana were awarded a penalty. Gyan took responsibility but struck the crossbar, forcing the match into a shootout. Uruguay won 4-2 to reach the semi-finals.

Gyan’s miss became one of the defining images of the 2010 World Cup, but Ayew said his team-mate’s wider contribution had to be recognised. Ghana had come within one successful penalty of becoming the first African nation to reach the men’s World Cup semi-finals.

Cameroon had reached the quarter-finals in 1990 and Senegal had done so in 2002, but neither team had gone further. Ghana were the only African side to reach the last eight at the first World Cup staged on the continent.

Although Suarez was punished under the Laws of the Game, Ghana failed to capitalise on the opportunity and Uruguay progressed. Ayew said the outcome was painful because the Black Stars had believed they could “surprise the world”.

Ghana’s campaign remains one of the most significant in the country’s football history. Ayew, then a young player in the squad, later became one of the team’s senior figures. More than a decade on, he argues Gyan should be remembered for helping Ghana reach the brink of history, rather than only for the penalty he missed.
