Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique says Manchester City’s trophies should be recognised for what the club achieved on the pitch, despite the financial charges brought against them by the Premier League.
Enrique made the comments before Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League meeting with Manchester City. He said the allegations against City were surprising, but stressed that the legal process should be allowed to run its course before any conclusions are reached.
The Spaniard praised Manchester City’s style of football and argued that their performances merited credit. He also said he hoped the club would avoid sanctions, while accepting that any final decision would be made by the relevant authorities.
The Premier League charged Manchester City in February 2023 with more than 100 alleged breaches of its financial rules. The accusations cover the period from 2009 to 2018 and include alleged failures to provide accurate financial information.
The charges also relate to alleged breaches involving payments to players and managers.
Manchester City have consistently denied any wrongdoing. The case is being considered through independent proceedings and has also been subject to legal challenges.
Any findings and possible sanctions will depend on the outcome of that process. Enrique’s comments reflect his view that the club’s success on the pitch should not be dismissed while the allegations remain unresolved.
