“I met a Ghana Premier League player who told me he’s been paid GH¢300,” Agbana said.

He added that the situation was not limited to one player or one club, claiming that some footballers in Ghana’s top division receive less than GH¢1,000.

“There are players who earn less than GH¢1,000. But who do you blame? You can’t blame the team owners.”

Agbana said clubs were operating in difficult economic circumstances, with poor attendances and inadequate facilities limiting their ability to generate income and improve players’ salaries.

He based his comments partly on his experience of running Nukunu Sports Academy, saying the costs involved in managing a football club were substantial while the financial returns remained limited.

“As a team owner, I look at the investment going in, but there is low patronage, and the facilities are not there,” he added.

His remarks underline the financial challenges facing Ghanaian football at a time when clubs are preparing to begin a new league campaign. While players’ earnings have attracted renewed attention, Agbana’s comments also focused on the conditions in which clubs are expected to operate.

He said low support from spectators and the lack of suitable infrastructure were major barriers to increasing revenue. In his view, those problems make it difficult for owners to meet the financial demands of running teams, including paying players at higher levels.

The comments come before the scheduled opening of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season on Saturday, September 5. Eighteen clubs will compete for the national title during the campaign.

The start of the season has therefore brought renewed focus to the financial realities of domestic football, both for the players who depend on their wages and for the clubs responsible for funding their operations. Agbana’s account of a player receiving GH¢300 has highlighted the gap between the status of the Ghana Premier League as the country’s top division and the earnings available to some of its participants.
