Tottenham sign Savio from Manchester City in £85m deal after winger changes name

Brazil international Savinho will begin his Tottenham Hotspur career under the name Savio after completing an £85 million move from Manchester City.

The 22-year-old has been known as Savinho throughout his career, but Tottenham have formally introduced their new signing as Savio following his arrival in North London.

The London club used Savio, rather than the nickname that accompanied him during his rise in Brazilian football, in its announcement confirming the winger had signed a five-year contract. His full name is Savio Moreira de Oliveira, meaning the club has chosen to use his given name instead of “Savinho”.

The change will be one of the first details Tottenham supporters will need to become accustomed to as the Brazil international starts a new phase of his career.

Savio joins Spurs after two seasons with Manchester City. He moved to the Premier League club from Troyes in July 2024 for a reported £30.8 million and made 84 appearances for City.

During his time at Manchester City, the winger scored seven goals and supplied 16 assists. Tottenham have now committed £85 million to secure his services, with the player agreeing to remain at the club for five years.

Savio said a conversation with Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi played a decisive role in persuading him to make the move.

“As soon as I spoke to the coach, I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level,” he said.

His transfer marks the latest step in a career that has taken him from Brazil to Europe and then into the Premier League. The move also gives Tottenham a player who has already gained substantial top-flight experience despite being only 22.

Tottenham’s official announcement consistently referred to him as Savio, confirming that the change is not simply a different spelling used informally by the club. Instead, it reflects the player’s full given name, Savio Moreira de Oliveira, while moving away from the “Savinho” nickname used since his emergence in Brazilian football.

The winger’s arrival from Manchester City follows his relatively short but productive spell in England. Across his 84 appearances for the club, he contributed seven goals and 16 assists before agreeing to join Tottenham.

For Spurs fans, the main adjustment will be seeing a familiar player presented under a slightly different name. The footballer formerly widely known as Savinho will now be officially identified by Tottenham as Savio.
