Former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi, football icon Abedi Pele and members of the Ayew family were among the prominent figures to join Asamoah Gyan in mourning his late father, George Gyan Mensah.

A one-week memorial observance was held on Friday at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools AstroTurf in Accra, where relatives, friends, former players and football administrators gathered to support the Gyan family.

Abedi Pele attended the ceremony with his sons Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew and Rahim Ayew. Andre Ayew, a former Black Stars captain, shared an emotional embrace with his former Ghana team-mate Asamoah Gyan as he expressed his condolences.

Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah was also present at the gathering, which brought together leading figures from different generations of Ghanaian football.

The attendance reflected the close relationships built through the Black Stars over many years, with former players and football officials joining the Gyan family during the period of mourning.

Current GFA president Kurt Okraku paid his respects by signing the book of condolences in memory of George Gyan Mensah. Nyantakyi, who led the Ghana Football Association for more than a decade, also visited the family to offer his sympathies.

George Gyan Mensah was the father of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and his brother Baffour Gyan. Tributes have continued to come from former team-mates, football administrators and supporters since news of his death became known.

The one-week observance is part of the family’s funeral arrangements, while Ghana’s football community continues to rally around the Gyan family.

The gathering in Accra provided an opportunity for members of the national team’s past and present football circles to stand alongside Asamoah Gyan and his relatives. The presence of Abedi Pele, the Ayew family, Appiah, Nyantakyi and Okraku underlined the breadth of support for the former Black Stars captain.

Gyan was a central figure for Ghana during his international career, while the Ayews and Abedi Pele have also played prominent roles in the country’s football history. Their attendance formed part of the wider response from Ghanaian football following the death of George Gyan Mensah.

Family members, friends, former players and administrators took part in the memorial gathering at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools AstroTurf. The event was held as the family continued preparations for the funeral and as further messages of sympathy reached Asamoah Gyan and Baffour Gyan.

The observance brought together those connected to the Gyan family personally and those who shared a long association with Asamoah Gyan through the Black Stars. It also served as a public show of solidarity from Ghanaian football figures during the mourning period.
