Ghanaian boxing prospect Theophilus Kpakpo “Theo Lopez” Allotey will face Argentina’s Facundo David Garcia in a WBA Super Flyweight final eliminator in Accra on 19 September, with victory potentially earning him a world championship opportunity.

The bout will headline the inaugural “Osagyefo Fight Night”, promoted by the new Obra Sports syndicate in honour of Ghana’s founding President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The event will take place two days before Ghana’s official holiday celebrating Dr Nkrumah’s legacy. A committed boxing fan, he hosted legendary American heavyweight Muhammad Ali in Accra in 1964.

For 24-year-old Allotey, the contest represents a major opportunity to continue a rapid rise that has already seen him claim five titles since turning professional. He has repeatedly spoken of his ambition to end Ghana’s long wait for a global champion, a goal he set even before making his professional debut.

Garcia, though, is expected to provide a significant test. The Argentine has a record of six wins, two defeats and two draws, with three victories coming by knockout, since beginning his professional career in February 2021.

The fight in Accra will be Garcia’s second successive contest outside Argentina. Each of his previous nine professional bouts had taken place in his home country before his most recent appearance at Santiago de Chile in Chile, where he secured a hard-fought split-decision victory over local boxer Andres Campos.

His assignment in Accra will therefore be a new experience for the South American fighter, who will be competing away from home once again.

Allotey has already shown he can perform on an international stage. The former bronze medallist at the Accra 2023 African Games became a professional in July 2024 and has since assembled a collection of national, UBO Africa, WBO Africa, WBO Global and WBA Africa titles.

His progress has also attracted attention from the leading boxing sanctioning organisations. He broke into the Ring Magazine Top 10 after stopping Namibia’s Jonas Erastus in the seventh round last April to win the WBO Global Super Flyweight title.

That victory represented Allotey’s fifth championship in 22 months as a professional. It also enhanced his reputation as one of Ghana’s most promising emerging world-title contenders, while helping him climb the WBO, WBC and WBA global rankings.

The Legacy Rise Sports and Wisdom Boxing Gym protege now has the chance to turn that momentum into a genuine world championship challenge. A win over Garcia in front of his home supporters in Bukom would take Allotey one step closer to the sport’s biggest stage.
