Real Madrid are currently ahead of Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid in the race to sign AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, with the Dutch youngster valued at about €60m.

The three La Liga clubs are monitoring the 20-year-old’s situation as interest in his services grows, according to reports in the Spanish media. Real Madrid are understood to be the most serious about making a move for Smit during the current transfer window.

Spanish newspaper AS reports that all three clubs are following the midfielder closely as he continues to establish himself as one of the most promising young players in his position in European football.

Real Madrid are seeking further reinforcement in midfield and hold Smit in particularly high regard. Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid also view him as a player who could represent a valuable investment, with the potential to develop into an important asset over the medium and long term.

Smit’s performances for AZ Alkmaar have driven the growing interest from Spain’s leading clubs. His technical quality, ability to create opportunities and control the tempo of matches have helped him attract attention from some of Europe’s biggest sides.

AZ Alkmaar are reported to have set the player’s valuation at approximately €60m. That figure is considered negotiable and relatively attainable when compared with the increasingly high fees being demanded in this summer’s transfer market, particularly for young midfielders.

The involvement of Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes could also influence the next stage of the midfielder’s career. Mendes, one of the most prominent agents in world football, manages Smit’s affairs and has strong connections with all three interested clubs.

Those relationships could help shape the negotiations and potentially play a significant role in determining which club Smit joins, although no agreement has been reported.

For now, Real Madrid appear to have the advantage because of their desire to strengthen their midfield. However, the presence of Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid means the pursuit could develop into another contest between three of Spain’s leading clubs for a highly rated European prospect.

Smit’s emergence at AZ Alkmaar has made him an increasingly attractive target, and the reported €60m valuation gives the transfer race a clear financial dimension. With all three clubs assessing his future, Real Madrid’s current lead could be tested if their Spanish rivals decide to step up their interest.
