Ghana keep Black Stars coaching options open as Carlos Queiroz future remains unclear

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is continuing discussions with other candidates for the Black Stars job despite Carlos Queiroz leading the team to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

GFA Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo confirmed that the governing body has not yet decided whether Queiroz will remain in charge beyond the tournament.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is still in talks with other coaches for the Black Stars job,” Oduro Sarfo told Kumasi-based Ezra Radio.

The uncertainty follows Ghana’s exit from the World Cup, where they were eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing 1-0 to Colombia. Although the Black Stars progressed from their group, the defeat ended their campaign and left the GFA facing an important decision over the team’s technical direction.

Queiroz, 73, was appointed in April on a short-term contract after Otto Addo’s departure. The experienced Portuguese coach was brought in specifically to guide Ghana through the World Cup, with the possibility of a successful campaign leading to a longer-term agreement.

It had initially been expected that Queiroz would continue in the role after the tournament. However, negotiations over an extension have reportedly proved difficult, particularly because of the coach’s demands.

Oduro Sarfo’s comments indicate that the GFA is assessing alternative options while it considers the most suitable person to lead the Black Stars into the next stage of their international programme. The association has not closed the door on Queiroz, but his position remains uncertain as discussions continue.

AFCON qualification adds urgency

Ghana are due to return to competitive action in September, when their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations begins.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside West African neighbours Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia. Ghana will be looking to start the campaign strongly and secure qualification for the next continental tournament.

The qualifiers carry particular significance after Ghana missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. As four-time African champions, the Black Stars will be determined to avoid another absence from the prestigious competition.

The GFA must therefore settle the coaching situation before the qualification campaign begins. Whether Queiroz is offered a new contract or another coach is selected, Ghana will need stability and a clear plan as preparations begin for the next phase of the national team’s development.

Queiroz’s short-term appointment achieved the immediate objective of taking Ghana beyond the World Cup group stage, but the defeat by Colombia has left the association to weigh the wider needs of the team. With discussions still taking place, the GFA’s decision will determine the direction of the Black Stars ahead of a crucial period in their international schedule.
