Ghana’s Black Satellites eliminated from WAFU B U-20 Championship after Togo draw

Ghana’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship ended with a goalless draw against Togo in their final Group B match at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire.

The Black Satellites needed a victory to keep their qualification campaign alive, but were unable to find the goal that would have taken them into the last four.

Maxwell Konadu’s team produced one of their most controlled performances of the tournament, dominating possession and creating the clearer chances. Their attacking approach, however, was not rewarded as Togo’s defence resisted sustained pressure throughout the match.

Ghana believed they had broken the deadlock midway through the game, only for the effort to be ruled out. The decision denied the Black Satellites the breakthrough they had been seeking and left them needing to find another route to victory.

They continued to advance in search of a winner, but Togo remained organised and resilient. The Togolese defence held firm until the final whistle, securing the point that confirmed Ghana’s exit from the competition.

The result left the Black Satellites third in Group B with two points from three matches. Ghana’s campaign began with a 4-2 defeat by Nigeria, before they responded with a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso.

A draw was not enough in their final fixture, with victory required to revive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. Instead, the stalemate brought an early end to Ghana’s tournament.

The outcome will be a disappointment for the players and technical team, although the championship provided the squad with valuable experience against some of the strongest youth sides in the WAFU B region.

The Black Satellites showed resilience and attacking ambition during the competition, alongside periods of individual and collective quality. Konadu also used the tournament to assess a number of emerging players in competitive international conditions.

For many members of the squad, the championship offered important exposure at regional level. Those experiences are expected to contribute to their development and could help several of the players take on significant roles within Ghana’s youth football structure in the coming years.

Ghana have already secured participation in the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations because they will host the tournament. The WAFU B Championship was therefore an important part of the team’s longer-term preparations for that continental competition.

Although the group-stage elimination represents a setback, the matches in Cote d’Ivoire have given the squad further experience as it continues to develop ahead of next year’s showpiece on home soil.
