Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu is undergoing a medical at Ipswich Town as the newly promoted Premier League club closes in on a £20m deal to sign him permanently from Leicester City.
The 21-year-old wide man is expected to join Kieran McKenna’s side for an initial fee of about £20m plus add-ons, with only minor formalities understood to be standing in the way of an official announcement.
If completed, the transfer would see one of the Championship’s standout performers from last season join a club preparing for its first top-flight campaign in more than two decades.
Standout season at Leicester
Fatawu’s move follows an eye-catching 2025-26 campaign in which he played a central role in Leicester’s promotion push from the Championship.
The Ghana international scored nine goals and provided eight assists in 44 league appearances, emerging as one of Leicester’s most influential attacking players across the season.
His direct running, creativity from wide areas and growing end product drew praise from supporters and analysts alike, helping to significantly raise his profile within English football.
That form sparked strong interest from several clubs, but Ipswich are understood to have moved decisively to secure his signature.
Ipswich’s Premier League preparations
Ipswich, who have returned to the Premier League after a long absence, are looking to strengthen their squad in preparation for the demands of top-flight football.
Fatawu is seen as a key addition to bolster their attacking options, offering pace, width and the ability to create chances from the flanks.
According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, the player has already started his medical with the Suffolk club, signalling that negotiations between the two clubs and the player’s representatives are at an advanced stage.
Once the medical and final paperwork are completed, Ipswich are expected to confirm the signing, which would represent a significant statement of intent ahead of the new season.
A platform on the biggest stage
For Fatawu, the move would provide the opportunity to continue his development in the Premier League and to enhance his status within Ghana’s national team set-up.
The forward will be aiming to establish himself as one of Ghana’s leading attacking talents on one of the game’s biggest stages, using the platform at Ipswich to push his international claims further.
With pre-season preparations under way and the new Premier League campaign approaching, Ipswich are likely to want the deal concluded swiftly so Fatawu can integrate into McKenna’s plans and adapt to his new surroundings.
An announcement confirming the transfer is expected once the final checks and formalities are completed.
