Zito Slams Kotoko: “Stop Slacking or Legacy Dies”

Former Abdul Karim Zito, who previously helmed Asante Kotoko, has voiced his frustration over the Porcupine Warriors’ recent performances, weeks after leaving the club, while urging players and staff to maintain focus as the season reaches its critical stages.

Since Zito’s departure to take charge of AshantiGold SC, Kotoko’s form has dipped significantly. In their last four Ghana Premier League outings, the reigning two-time CAF Champions League winners have managed just one victory, one draw, and suffered two defeats, raising concerns among supporters about the club’s title ambitions.

After 25 league matches, Kotoko sit fifth on the table with 39 points, a position that falls short of the lofty expectations of the club’s fervent fanbase, who have become accustomed to regular success domestically and continentally. The team’s inconsistency has also put pressure on the interim coach, Prince Yaw Owusu, to stabilize results and guide the team back into contention for top honors.

In an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Zito did not mince words when expressing his displeasure over the current run of form. The former coach revealed he had spoken directly with some of the players, issuing a blunt warning about the need to maintain professionalism and fight for every point.

“I even spoke to them today, and I was furious,” Zito admitted.
“I asked, ‘Why are you doing this? What is going on? Please, push on. Don’t give up. I swear.’”

Zito’s message, though sharp, was laced with a sense of ownership and pride. Having spent over a decade as a player for Kotoko and subsequently transitioning into coaching, the veteran tactician emphasized that his attachment to the club goes beyond mere professional interest.

“At the end of the day, I’m a legend. I’m the vice president of a religious association. I played for this club for over 10 years and won a lot with them. Why should I hate it?” he added.

He also reminded the squad that Kotoko’s legacy is one of prestige and tradition, and that everyone associated with the club must respect and uphold it, regardless of the personnel changes that inevitably occur over time.

“This is not my first time coming to Kotoko and leaving, and I won’t be the last coach. The club has a legacy, and it must be respected.”

The former Black Satellites coach, who earned widespread acclaim during his tenure for guiding Kotoko to multiple domestic titles and regional trophies, has now moved on to AshantiGold SC. However, his words carry weight given his deep connection to the Porcupine Warriors and his understanding of the club’s expectations at every level.

Football analysts have interpreted Zito’s comments as both a critique of current performances and a motivational push, reminding players and management alike that complacency has no place in a club of Kotoko’s stature. His public admonition highlights the pressures facing Ghanaian clubs in the Premier League, where supporters demand consistent results and excellence both on and off the pitch.

With the league entering its final stretch, the message from Zito is clear: Kotoko must reignite their form and uphold the standards expected of a club steeped in history. While the former coach has moved to greener pastures, his call for dedication and resilience remains a rallying cry for the current squad as they strive to reclaim their winning momentum in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Kotoko now face crucial fixtures that could define their campaign, and fans will be watching closely to see whether the squad can heed Zito’s warning, regain form, and climb back toward the summit of Ghanaian football.
