The Hong Kong women’s football team has withdrawn from the Pink Ladies Cup in Dubai due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) cited the safety of staff and players as the top priority, stating they’ve formally notified tournament organizers of their decision to withdraw from the remaining matches.
The team, who arrived in the UAE last week, had played one match, losing 4-0 to Ghana. They were set to face Tanzania and Russia on March 4 and 6, respectively.
The HKFA assured the team is safe, sheltering at their hotel, and in constant communication with authorities.
The withdrawal leaves Tanzania, Ghana, and Russia remaining in the tournament.
Ghana’s Black Queens, who beat Russia 4-0, are poised to take advantage of the situation.
