Confederation of African Football Leadership Row Deepens Over General Secretary Role

Published: 5 months ago

Tensions are brewing within African football administration after an executive committee member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) openly questioned the legitimacy of General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba remaining in office.

Samir Sobha, who heads the Mauritius Football Association and sits on CAF’s Executive Committee, insists Mosengo-Omba’s mandate has run its course and that continuing in the role may breach internal regulations. CAF rules set the retirement age for staff at 63, with only a single three-year extension permitted.

Mosengo-Omba, appointed in 2021, reached the retirement threshold in 2022 but received an extension approved by CAF president Patrice Motsepe, which reportedly expired in October 2025. Sobha argues that any further stay risks undermining the legitimacy of decisions taken at the top level.

Responding to questions after an executive meeting in Dar es Salaam, Motsepe maintained that the organisation would handle the matter strictly within its statutes and governance framework.

Beyond the tenure debate, Sobha also raised broader concerns about transparency and institutional credibility, urging CAF to provide clear direction. He further extended an apology to Morocco over what he described as unfair circumstances surrounding a controversial penalty decision in the recent Africa Cup of Nations final — a moment that continues to stir debate across the continent.
