Interim Asante Kotoko SC head coach Prince Yaw Owusu has acknowledged that his side’s 1-0 defeat to Accra Hearts of Oak has significantly dented their Ghana Premier League title charge.
Owusu, appointed just a week after Abdul Karim Zito’s departure, led the Porcupine Warriors into the Super Clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Kotoko conceded in the 15th minute when Baba Adamu rose above his marker to head home what proved to be the winner.
Goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was caught off his line as the looping effort sailed into the net, leaving the hosts chasing the game early on.
Despite matching Hearts for long spells and applying pressure in phases, Kotoko were unable to break through a resolute defence.
“I think the boys did their best. They kept fighting until the end. It’s just the mistake from the goalkeeper that cost us,” Owusu said after the match.
The interim boss admitted the result carries serious consequences for their ambitions this season.
“This defeat to Hearts makes our title ambition very difficult. Now we need to fight very hard before we can get the title,” Owusu added.
The loss leaves Kotoko fifth on 35 points, nine adrift of leaders Medeama SC, as the Kumasi-based side faces a steep climb in the title race.
