Wolverhampton Wanderers have begun formal discussions with FC Basel over the potential signing of Ghanaian centre-back Jonas Adjetey as the Premier League side step up efforts to avoid relegation.

The 22-year-old defender has emerged as a key January target for Wolves, who are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after 23 matches and are keen to reinforce a backline that has struggled for consistency this season.

Sources indicate that Wolves have tabled an initial offer worth €13 million, with a further €2 million in performance-related add-ons, as negotiations with the Swiss giants continue in the closing stages of the winter transfer window.

Adjetey, a seven-time Ghana international, is highly rated for his composure, physical presence, and reading of the game, qualities Wolves believe could provide immediate stability in their relegation battle.

Head coach Rob Edwards has prioritised defensive reinforcements, and the Basel defender is understood to fit the profile the club is targeting both for the short term and the future.

Since arriving at Basel in August 2022, Adjetey has enjoyed a rapid rise, establishing himself as a regular performer in the Swiss Super League and gaining valuable experience in European competition. His development has not gone unnoticed, with several clubs monitoring his progress.

Although Transfermarkt currently values him at €7 million, growing interest has driven his market value significantly higher. RC Lens in France and Turkish giants Galatasaray have previously been linked with the defender, but Wolves are now believed to be leading the race.

Adjetey opted to remain in Switzerland last summer to continue his development rather than pursue a quick move, a decision that appears to have paid off as interest intensifies.

At just 22, the Ghanaian represents both a potential solution to Wolves’ immediate defensive concerns and a long-term asset with strong upside should the move materialise.
