Nii Lante Vanderpuye tips Daniel Laryea for World Cup after AFCON excellence

Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has heaped praise on Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea following his impressive showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Vanderpuye rated Laryea as the standout official at the tournament, despite the referee being thrust into the spotlight during the tense semi-final between Nigeria and hosts Morocco.

That match sparked controversy, with the Nigerian camp expressing dissatisfaction after their penalty shootout exit.

Unmoved by the backlash, the former legislator insisted Laryea handled his responsibilities with authority and professionalism throughout the competition.

He believes the referee’s overall performance places him firmly in contention for future global assignments.

“I am so proud as a Ghanaian because one Ghanaian in the middle distinguished himself so well,” he told JoyNews.

“The referee was excellent and I am sure FIFA would be considering him for the World Cup.

“Of all the matches that I’ve watched in the AFCON, I can tell you, not because I am bias as a Ghanaian, he is the best.

“His composure and positioning, I will give him 95 percent.”

He has since returned home and is expected to resume duties in the Ghana Premier League in the coming weeks.
