AFCON 2025: Thiaw Faces Suspension, Senegal Risk World Cup Absence

Published: 1 day ago
AFCON

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw is facing disciplinary action from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after urging his players to leave the pitch during the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco.

The incident occurred when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a penalty to Morocco in stoppage time, sparking chaos and a 14-minute delay.

Thiaw has apologized for his actions, saying “I didn’t appreciate at all that I told my players to leave the field. I apologise for football.”

CAF has opened disciplinary proceedings against Thiaw, who could face a lengthy suspension, potentially missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned Senegal’s behavior, calling it “unacceptable.”

The incident has sparked debate about officiating standards and the impact of controversy on African football’s credibility.
