Algerian football star Riyad Mahrez has hinted at retiring from international football after the national team’s AFCON quarter-final exit.
Algeria were beaten 2-0 by Nigeria in the quarter-finals of the 2025 AFCON.
“I don’t know what’s left for me with the national team. I’ve been here 12 years, I’ve experienced highs and lows, that’s football,” Mahrez said in his post match interview.
The 34-year-old added, “This is my last AFCON, I’m sad it ends in the quarters. I would have loved for us to win the trophy again, unfortunately it’s impossible”
Mahrez, who has been instrumental in Algeria’s success, including their 2019 AFCON title win, expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance.
Algeria fell 2-0 to Nigeria in the quarter-finals, ending their AFCON campaign.
Mahrez’s future with the national team is uncertain, but his contributions to Algerian football will be remembered.
