DR Congo’s football federation, FECOFA, has fired back at Nigeria’s complaint over Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s eligibility, calling it a “shortcut” and emphasizing that the World Cup should be decided on the pitch, not in court.
“If you can’t win on the pitch, don’t try to win from the back door. The World Cup must be played with dignity and confidence — not with legal tricks,” FECOFA said in a statement.
The controversy surrounds Wan-Bissaka’s nationality switch from England to DR Congo, with Nigeria alleging that he holds a European passport, violating DR Congo’s dual citizenship ban.
Nigeria has petitioned FIFA, seeking DR Congo’s disqualification, which could revive their 2026 World Cup hopes.
FIFA has initiated an investigation, and a decision is pending.
If upheld, DR Congo could face sanctions, including match forfeitures or disqualification from the intercontinental playoffs.
