Bayer Leverkusen winger Ernest Poku says his international future remains open, revealing that he will only make a decision after consulting his parents and agent.

The 21-year-old who has featured for the Netherlands at various youth levels remains eligible to play for Ghana despite his long-standing involvement with the Dutch setup.

With the 2026 World Cup edging closer, Poku has become a subject of growing interest among Ghanaian supporters hopeful of seeing him commit to the Black Stars.

However, the former AZ Alkmaar academy standout insists he is not rushing into any decision.

“We have to see, I don’t know yet. I didn’t get a call or something, so I don’t know. I don’t know, we’ll see then, because obviously I have to talk with my parents about it, with my agent about it. So, I don’t know,” Poku told Oma Akatugba in an interview.

Poku’s youth career with the Netherlands includes appearances for the U-16, U-19 and U-21 teams.

He netted his first goal at U-19 level in a match against Ukraine in 2022 before earning promotion to the U-21 side. His club form has also grown steadily, recording 15 goals for AZ’s youth team before stepping up to senior football.

He completed a move to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for a reported €10 million plus €2 million in add-ons, signing a five-year contract.

Since joining the German champions, Poku has delivered five goals and six assists in 25 matches across all competitions.

If his form continues, Poku could find himself in the middle of an intense tug-of-war between Ghana and the Netherlands before the World Cup begins.
