Basake Holy Stars’ new head coach, Johnson Smith, says his team’s dramatic 2-1 win over Asante Kotoko is “just the beginning” as he targets a strong turnaround for the struggling Premier League side.
Smith, appointed barely 24 hours before the fixture, masterminded a stunning victory at the AAKII Arena on Wednesday, halting Kotoko’s unbeaten run in the league.
“This is just the beginning,” he said after the match. “I don’t have to talk much. This is my first game, so I won’t brag. But we will do more.”
Holy Stars opened the scoring four minutes into the second half through Richmond Somuah, who finished calmly to send the home fans into celebration. Kotoko hit back almost immediately, with Kwame Poku levelling in the 53rd minute to swing momentum their way.
Kotoko piled on the pressure in search of a winner, but Holy Stars held their ground and delivered the decisive moment late on. Prince Tweneboah struck two minutes into stoppage time to seal all three points in dramatic fashion.
The victory lifts Holy Stars to nine points, strengthening their bid to climb out of the relegation zone. Kotoko stay fourth on the table, missing a big chance to close the gap at the top.
