Henan FC’s Ghanaian forward Frank Acheampong was the victim of racial abuse during a recent Chinese Super League match, prompting the Chinese Professional Football League to hand Chengdu Rongcheng FC a US$70,000 fine.

The 32-year-old striker, who has scored 14 goals and provided three assists in 30 appearances this season, faced “abusive remarks” and “discriminatory behaviour” from supporters during the clash against Henan FC.

According to The Global Times, the misconduct included “monkey-calls” mocking Acheampong’s skin colour and repeated middle-finger gestures, with footage of the incident widely shared on social media.

Authorities acted by arresting two men shortly after the match.

They were placed in administrative detention, which can last up to 20 days, and were banned from attending any sporting events for a year.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the league also ordered that a section of Chengdu Rongcheng’s stadium stands be closed for one match.

Henan FC currently sit 10th in the league standings.

The club will now aim to focus on upcoming matches while the league sends a clear message against racist behaviour.

Meanwhile, Acheampong, a seasoned international with 23 caps for Ghana, previously played for Belgian side RSC Anderlecht before moving to the Chinese Super League.
