The Essipong Sports Stadium in the Western Region has been found in a worrying state of decay, years after serving as one of the key venues for the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
The discovery was made during an inspection tour by Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams and National Sports Authority Director General Yaw Ampofu Ankrah.
With space for twenty thousand spectators, the facility has seen little meaningful maintenance since its opening.
Planned rehabilitation works under Phases I and II were supposed to cover new anti-rust roofing, seat replacements, washroom upgrades, air-conditioning installations, better lighting, and a modern scoreboard.
However, the inspection revealed an unexpected complication: private developers have encroached on land around the stadium.
Hon. Adams urged the Regional Coordinating Council and traditional leaders to step in swiftly to resolve these land issues.
He stressed the broader importance of the project, “Essipong is not just a Western Region issue; this is a national infrastructure that must be brought back to life.”
Beyond the initial restoration plan, additional upgrades are expected, including improvements to the pitch, enhanced PA systems, renovated dressing rooms, upgraded corporate boxes, and better security and hostel facilities.
The measures are intended to bring the stadium back to full operational strength.
