Kofi Adams backs future World Cup co-hosting bid with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says Ghana should begin exploring the possibility of hosting a future FIFA World Cup alongside Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

He believes the government must take advantage of FIFA’s growing preference for multi-nation tournaments, a model already adopted for upcoming editions.

The 2026 World Cup will be jointly staged by the USA, Mexico and Canada, with Morocco, Spain and Portugal set to share hosting duties in 2030.

Adams argues that a similar regional approach could work for West Africa.

“They [FIFA] are beginning to adapt a number of nations doing it so maybe who knows, the next one would be Ghana, Nigeria, and then Côte d’Ivoire coming together to also host the World Cup and it will be good.”

The Minister added that “I believe that we, together with Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, who have already invested quite a lot because they hosted AFCON not too long ago. We can also ask for that right.”

Ghana’s most recent large-scale event was the delayed 2023 African Games in 2024, while Côte d’Ivoire successfully staged the 2023 AFCON.

Adams insists early planning will strengthen any future proposal.
