Former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton believes he should have been given more time to adapt to the national team role before his dismissal earlier this year.
Hughton, who initially served as technical advisor to Otto Addo at the 2022 World Cup, was appointed head coach in early 2023. But after Ghana’s group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the Ghana Football Association relieved him of his duties.
Speaking to 3Sports, the former Brighton and Nottingham Forest manager admitted that managing a national team requires a different rhythm compared to club football ;he was still adjusting to.
“It’s about the structure ; I was told that when you’re used to club level, it does take some time to adjust to national football, because the stakes today are very different in national football, and of course, working in Africa,” Hughton explained.
“So I would have wanted more time, and I generally feel that, having been given more time, I would have adjusted better to the role. But this is football; it’s very much about results and emotions.”
The GFA has since reappointed Otto Addo on a long-term contract as Ghana rebuilds ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and upcoming international assignments.
