Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schaefer has thrown his full support behind Benjamin Asare, insisting the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper has earned his spot as Ghana’s number one purely through performance.
Asare has been a key figure in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, delivering consistent displays and keeping several clean sheets. Despite this, some fans have questioned whether he is ready for the global stage given his limited experience at the top level.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Schaefer explained that Asare’s selection was based strictly on merit.
“We watched matches and decided we needed a goalkeeper, and it was Benjamin Asare,” Schaefer said. “But we also have to compliment the goalkeeper’s coach, Fatau Dauda, for the excellent work he’s done.”
Asare is widely expected to make Ghana’s final World Cup squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, his continued hold on the number-one shirt will depend on his form and competition leading up to the finals.
The Black Stars will learn their group-stage opponents when the World Cup draw takes place on December 5, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
