Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo has urged the nation to honor its sporting icons while they’re still alive.

Polo, a member of Ghana’s 1978 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, expressed frustration that recognition often comes after death.

He shared the story of former Black Stars captain Awuley Quaye, who struggled in silence before his passing.

“They are waiting for me to die before they honor me and I’m saying, no, if I die, no, I don’t need anything again, ” Polo said.

“I want to be honored now because if I die, I don’t even need it,” he said.

Polo played 54 times scoring 20 goals for Ghana national team from 1973 until 1985.
