Kobbie Mainoo, an 18-year-old English-born midfielder of Ghanaian descent, has been called up to the England men’s senior squad for the first time.

Initially part of the England U-21s squad, Mainoo was drafted into coach Gareth Southgate’s group and reported to St. George’s Park on Tuesday.

Mainoo, who plays for Manchester United, has previously represented England at U-17 through to U-19 level.

Born in Stockport to Ghanaian parents, Mainoo made his first Manchester United start against Everton in November and has since made a further 19 appearances. He scored his first goal for the club in an FA Cup fourth-round win at Newport at the end of January and followed it up with a late winner against Wolves in the Premier League four days later.

Mainoo’s impressive performances have not gone unnoticed. He is highly rated, and his market value, according to Transfermarkt, is 35 million euros.

The youngster will now be looking to impress in the forthcoming internationals against Brazil and Belgium.
