We are counting on Dennis Appiah’s experience and versatility – Saint-Étienne coach Laurent Batlles

Saint-Étienne head coach Laurent Batlles is excited defender Dennis Appiah has joined the club.

According to the head coach Batlles Dennis Appiah’s experience will help the youth players and also his ability to play as a full back will help the club in its battle to avoid relegation.

Saint-Étienne was relegated from the French top flight last season. The Greens are bottom of the 2022/23 French Ligue 2 table with 12 points after 17 games.

Dennis Appiah joined Saint-Étienne from Ligue 1 side Nantes until 2025. The club made the announcement on Tuesday 3rd January 2023.

The former French youth international first trained at AS Monaco, the native of Toulouse is the captain of the Monegasque generation that won the 2011 Gambardella Cup against the Greens of Idriss Saadi, beaten on penalties.

Promoted to the Principality’s first team, he played 27 games with his training club, most of them in Ligue 2 BKT.

After emerging on the Rock, the defender headed for Caen in the summer of 2013. In Normandy, he was soon unanimous with 114 appearances for SMC, including 68 in Ligue 1 Uber Eats.

He moved to Belgium to play for Pro League side Anderlecht. Appiah returned to France in 2019 and demonstrated in the ranks of FC Nantes all his reliability and versatility. After playing 37 games last season, he already has 22 appearances this season.

“Dennis is a versatile player capable of evolving as a full-back but also in a role of piston. He knows the high level very well and will bring his experience to our youth, his maturity and his serenity,” Batlles said.

“He’s a mentally fresh player who will help us get back on a healthy footing,”
