Ghanaian forward Gibson Adu says joining Greifswalder FC is the “best possible decision” for his career after completing a move from FC Bayern Munich’s reserve team.
The 18-year-old centre-forward has signed a two-year contract with the German club, which includes an option to extend the agreement for a further season.
Adu was born in Mainz and started playing football with SC Lerchenberg before entering the academy at FSV Mainz 05. He moved to the under-17 side at SpVgg Unterhaching in 2022 and made his 3. Liga debut only three days after turning 16.
During his first spell with Unterhaching, Adu made 10 substitute appearances across the final 14 matchdays of the campaign. He scored against VfB Lubeck to become the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history, achieving the feat at the age of 16 years, one month and 30 days.
His performances led to a transfer to FC Bayern Munich. Adu subsequently returned to SpVgg Unterhaching on loan twice and also spent a period with Austrian club SCR Altach.
Greifswalder FC sporting director Matthias Rahn said the signing represented a significant achievement for a club competing at regional level, while acknowledging the challenges in Adu’s development so far.
“With Gibson, we’ve pulled off a transfer that’s anything but a given for a regional league club. His footballing quality speaks for itself. He possesses exceptional potential and has already demonstrated at a very young age the level at which he can compete. Of course, we’re also aware of his past and know that things haven’t always gone perfectly,” said Rahn.
He said the club had carried out a detailed assessment of the player before agreeing the move and had held a series of frank conversations with him.
“That’s precisely why we thoroughly investigated him beforehand and held many open discussions. Ultimately, what mattered most to us was the impression Gibson makes on us today and the path he wants to take. We’re convinced that Greifswald can be the perfect place for him to refocus entirely on football.
“We’re giving him our trust, a clear sporting perspective, and clear expectations. He now needs to seize this opportunity. If Gibson combines his quality with the necessary discipline, mentality, and daily work ethic, I’m convinced he can be a game-changer for us. And we’re equally confident that we can help him take the next important step in his career,”
Adu said he was eager to begin working with his new team and was attracted by its youthful character and ambition.
“Joining GFC is the best possible decision for me. The team is young, fresh, and hungry. I want to play as much as possible and contribute goals and assists.”
Greifswalder FC said Adu’s experience is notable despite his age and described him as a highly talented attacking player. The club said his ability was clear and added that it was looking forward to seeing him play for the team.
