?The 16 players signed by Solskjaer for Man United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer three year reign as the Manchester United manager came to an end last month.

The Norwegian was first appointed on an interim basis but the club handed him a permanent deal after steadying the ship. In his tenure, he spent around £400million on new players but how have his players fared at Old Trafford?

United snapped the keeper in 2020 from Southend United. While he is yet to make a senior appearance for the team, the 22-year-old has been named on the bench for three United games and is spending 2021-22 on loan at League Two side Mansfield Town.

The only other keeper that United bought under Ole. Arriving last summer, he was brought in to fill the void left by Sergio Romero but is currently behind David de Gea and Dean Henderson in the pecking order and is yet to make his competitive debut.

McShane came through United’s academy but never made a first-team appearance and was sold to West Bromwich Albion in 2006. The 35-year-old returned to Old Trafford as a player coach and has made five appearances for United’s Under-23s.

Former United striker Diego Forlan recommended Pellistri to his former club with Solskjaer deciding to sign him in October 2020 from Uruguayan side Penarol. He featured for United’s Under-23s before joining Spanish side Alaves on loan in search of regular first-team football.

Currently, in the Middle East, Ighalo was signed on an initial six-month loan deal from the Chinese side of Shanghai Shenhua in January 2020. The former Watford striker did the job required of him and came close to achieving cult hero status at Old Trafford, scoring five goals in 11 cup games.

One of the best players for Ajax as they made it to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals, moved to United in 2020. But despite scoring on his Premier League debut, he failed to earn Solskjaer’s trust and surprisingly started just 17 games under the Norwegian. As fate would have it, he scored the last goal of Solskjaer’s reign.

Just as De Beek, Telles is yet to cement his place in the United team despite United spending an initial £13.6million deal in 2020 to rope him from Porto.

The Wales international was Solskjaer’s first signing at United in the summer of 2019, joining from Championship side Swansea City in a £15million deal.

The Wales international got off to a brilliant start with three goals in his first four Premier League appearances but failed to maintain that form with the club deciding to cash on him by selling the winger to Leeds in a £25million deal in the summer.

The Ivory Coast international has made just eight appearances for United. The 19-year-old has struggled with injuries since his move from Atalanta and has spent most of his time with the club’s U23 side. His only goal for United came against AC Milan in the Europa League last season.

After just one full Premier League season as Crystal Palace’s starting right-back, Wan-Bissaka then completed a £50million move to United in 2019. He has since cemented his place in the United’s defense even though his defending abilities have become under scrutiny of late.

Sancho was one of the most exciting youngsters at Borussia Dortmund but has failed to replicate that outing at United since joining in the summer.

Varane won three La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues during his 10 years at Real Madrid before moving to United this summer. He has brought the calmness that the club needed in defence but injuries have not done him any favors

The 36-year-old completed a fairytale return to Old Trafford earlier this year after he was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City. However, his arrival has coincided with a downturn in United’s fortunes and the next manager may need to make adaptations to accommodate the forward.

Cavani joined United as a 33-year-old free agent amid doubts from some whether he could make an impact on the Premier League. He admitted that he almost moved to Boca Juniors in January 2021 but Solskjaer thought that his presence was good for youngsters like Mason Greenwood who would learn a lot from him. He was handed a new deal this season but is expected to leave once his contract expires.

The United captain joined the club from Leicester City in 2019 in an £80million deal but has come under scrutiny for his performances. He kept a total of 26 Premier League clean sheets during his first two seasons at United, more than any other outfield player in that period but has regressed in recent games.

Argubably Solskajer’s best signing at United. Since joining United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, Fernandes has a remarkable record of 44 goals and 33 assists in 97 appearances in all competitions.
